Jessica Gonzalez story is like a real road movie startup. The girl was only 13 when, on a September evening in 1996, she shot and killed 23-year-old
Maria Rivera, a single mother. The murder happened only a few hours after the two former roommates had a fistfight after Jessica Gonzalez
accused Rivera of trying to steal her boyfriend.

Later, Jessica Gonzalez took her mother’s boyfriend’s car and drove to Rivera’s apartment, where as it was said she just called Maria Rivera
over to the driver’s window and then shot her right between the eyes.
It was agreed by the prosecutors to reduce the original charge of first-degree murder, which carried a mandatory life sentence, to
second-degree murder as long as a lengthy sentence was given. A superior court judge sentenced Jessica Gonzalez to serve
45 years of a 60-year sentence. Parole Board minutes show the board wanted Gonzalez released in time to take classes part time next month at
the Community College of Rhode Island.
